Swann of Stonehelm

House Swann of Stonehelm is one of the primary noble houses of the stormlands. They are marcher lords ruling from Stonehelm over the lands surrounding the Red Watch on Cape Wrath in the eastern Dornish Marches. They blazon their arms with argent and sable a swan counter charged. Their words are "Ever at odds"

Culture

Traits

Descended from the First Men, the Swanns have dark hair and eyes with fair complexions and strong features such as angular noses and broad jaws.

Customs

The Swanns have martial and naval traditions for their place overlooking a river that spills into the sea of Dorne. But beyond the warrior mentality that the Stormlands is known for because of their proximity to Dorne, they also have been known to enjoy hunting quite a bit, something some say is the cause, and a tool to teach the youth of house Swann how to be cautious and considerate.

History

Origins

House Swann is an old noble house, regarded as proud, powerful and cautious. They have governed their lands for as long as any can remember. From Stonehelm they control the Slayne, a major river route inland to the Stormlands, gaining them much wealth and power. The Swanns and Carons both claim to be the oldest of the marcher lords.

Targaryen Dynasty

House Swann participated in the First Dornish War as well as the Vulture Hunt but were generally unremarkable in both.

Seat and Holdings

Stonehelm was built to oversee the Slayne. During the coming of the Andals to the stormlands, a battle on the river Slayne occurred near the castle.   During the Vulture Hunt, the Vulture King divided his forces and sent Lord Walter Wyl to attack Stonehelm. Lord Orys Baratheon smashed the Dornish host beneath the walls of Stonehelm, however, and captured Walter.   Stonehelm's watchtowers are made of black and white stone and stand high over the tree tops of the Rainwood giving sight on a clear day all the way to the small islands that sit beyond the Slayne in the sea of Dorne. The keep of Stonehelm itself is made of pale stone with ebony doors and trimwork. There is a village not far from Stonehelm inside the Rainwood not visible from the river or bay and the people of Stonehelm tend to work in timber or fishing.
